Wendy's beats by $0.04, reports revs in-line; increases FY19 EPS guidance 

  • Reports Q3 (Sep) earnings of $0.19 per share, excluding non-recurring items, $0.04 better than the S&P Capital IQ Consensus of $0.15; revenues rose 9.3% year/year to $437.88 mln vs the $434.45 mln S&P Capital IQ Consensus.
    • Co reports North America Same-Restaurant sales growth of +4.4% (note: this was already provided at Investor Day on Oct 11)
  • Co issues upside guidance for FY19, increases adjusted EPS guidance to -1.5% to +1.5% from prior guidance of down 3.5-6.5%; we computes the new guidance as $0.58-0.60 vs. $0.58 S&P Capital IQ Consensus. Co also increases its FY19 outlook for global systemwide sales growth to +3.5-4.0% from +3-4%.
  • Co says it's on track to achieve global systemwide sales of $12.0-12.5 bln in 2020 and adjusted EBITDA of $425-435 mln.
  • At the end of Q3, approximately 56% of the global system was image activated (renovated). This compares to approximately 50% at the end of 2018.

    • Reports Q2 (Jun) loss of $0.01 per share, excluding non-recurring items, $0.14 worse thanthe Capital IQ Consensus of $0.13; revenues fell 16.3% year/year to $320.34 mln vs the $301.4 mln Capital IQ Consensus.
    • During 2017, the Company now expects:
      • Commodity cost inflation of approximately 3 to 4 percent compared to 2016.
      • Company-operated restaurant margin of approximately 18.0 to 18.5 percent.
      • Net franchise rental income of approximately $100 to $105 million.
      • Adjusted EBITDA of approximately $404 to $410 million, an increase of approximately 3 to 5 percent compared to 2016
    • In addition, the Company continues to expect:

    • Reports Q2 (Jun) earnings of $0.10 per share, excluding non-recurring items, $0.01 better thanthe Capital IQ Consensus of $0.09; revenues fell 21.8% year/year to $382.7 mln vs the $366.92 mln Capital IQ Consensus.
    • Co issues in-line guidance for FY16, raises EPS to $0.39-0.40 from $0.38-0.40, excluding non-recurring items, vs. $0.39 Capital IQ Consensus; increasing its outlook for 2016 adjusted EBITDA to flat to up 1 % compared to 2015 from its prior guidance of down 1 % to up 1 %. The Company now expects: Same-restaurant sales growth of ~1.0 to 2.0 % for the North America system (down from +3%). Restaurant margin of ~19.0 % at North America Company-operated restaurants. Commodity costs to decrease ~5 to 6 % compared to 2015. The Company remains on track with its plan to reduce its Company-operated restaurant ownership to ~5 percent of the total system by the end of 2016.
    • The Company continues to expect to achieve the following North America system goals by the end of 2020: Average unit sales volumes of $2.0 million. Restaurant margins of 20%.     • Reports Q1 (Mar) earnings of $0.11 per share, $0.05 better than the Capital IQ Consensus of $0.06; revenues fell 16.2% year/year to $378.8 mln vs the $350.46 mln Capital IQ Consensus.
      • Reports North America system same-restaurant sales increase 3.6% (+6.8% on a two-year basis).
    • Co issues upside guidance for FY16, sees EPS of 0.38-0.40 vs. $0.36 Capital IQ Consensus Estimate (prior guidance $0.35-0.37).
      • Raises outlook for 2016 Adjusted EBITDA to down 1 percent to up 1 percent compared to 2015 from its prior guidance of down 2 percent to flat.
      • Continues to expect same-restaurant sales growth of approximately 3 percent for the North America system.
    • "As we look to the second quarter, the performance of our '4 for $4' promotion remains solid with the addition of our Crispy Chicken BLT to the offering," Penegor said.
