Earnings this week : Jan 14 - 18, 19 (wk 3)

Corporate profits will take center stage when fourth quarter earnings season kicks off this week.

The SEC allows companies a larger window to file their annual reports relative to quarterly updates. As a result, we will see preannouncements throughout January and fourth quarter earnings season will drag on into March.

This week, the big banks will dominant the corporate earnings newsflow.

=Weatherford WFT) scraps joint venture, sells a business to Schlumberger (SLB)

HOUSTON, Dec 29 (Reuters) - U.S. oilfield services company Weatherford International Plc on Friday sold a U.S. oil-well business to rival Schlumberger NV for $430 million, abandoning a planned joint venture.
Weatherford has struggled with losses and has been looking to sell units and raise cash to reduce about $7.9 billion in debt. It suffered a $875 million loss on $4.21 billion in revenue for the first nine months of this year.
In March, the company agreed to put its North American pressure pumping and well completions operations into a venture with Schlumberger in exchange for $535 million in cash and a 30 percent stake in the resulting business, called OneStim. The effort was designed to better compete against market leader Halliburton and fast-growing companies such as Keane Group.
On Friday, the joint venture was abruptly called off as Weatherford sold its U.S. pressure pumping assets used to hydraulically fracture shale rock to release trapped oil and gas, and transferred about 100 employees to Schlumberger.
The new deal "delivers cash proceeds that enable our company to begin the deleveraging process," Weatherford Chief Executive Mark McCollum said in a statement. Keeping the U.S. and Canadian well-completions operation "allows for significant upside potential," he added.
Pressure pumping specialists have been expanding rapidly with strong demand from shale producers taking advantage of higher crude prices. This month, Keane Group Inc said it would spend $115 million to expand its fleet, citing higher demand and improved economics.
RBC Capital Markets analyst Kurt Hallead in a research note said the deal doubles Schlumberger's hydraulic fracturing fleet and allows it to avoid a potential payout to acquire the rest of OneStim. Weatherford gets most of the cash it would have received under the original agreement, but gives up recurring income from the joint venture, he wrote.

=Schlumberger (SLB) : bear trap

Schlumberger (SLB) broke support with a surge in volume, but this support break did not hold as the stock surged with strong volume the last two weeks. The decline below 62 looks like a selling climax because of high volume and the gap down. The surge in volume flushes out of the sellers and paves the way for a bounce. SLB got its bounce with a two week surge that exceeded the 50-day EMA today. Notice that volume was above average five of the last nine days.
Despite early signs of a bottom, the overall trend remains down with resistance marked in the 69-70 area. A breakout here is needed to fully reverse the long-term downtrend.

Schlumberger beats by $0.02, reports revs in-line; announces new $10 bln share repurchase  :
  • Reports Q4 (Dec) earnings of $0.65 per share, excluding non-recurring items,$0.02 better than the Capital IQ Consensus of $0.63; revenues fell 38.7% year/year to $7.74 bln vs the $7.79 bln Capital IQ Consensus.
  • Capex (excluding multiclient and SPM investments) is expected to be $2.4 billion for 2016. Capex for the full year 2015 was $2.4 billion.
  • "Fourth-quarter revenue decreased 9% sequentially driven by the continuing decline in rig activity and persistent pricing pressure throughout our global operations that also suffered from activity disruptions and project delays and cancellations. North America revenue fell 14% sequentially as the US land rig count declined 15% and customer E&P budgets were exhausted. International revenue declined 6% due to the combination of customer budget cuts, the start of the seasonal winter slow-down, persistent pricing pressure, and the largely muted year-end product, software, and multiclient seismic license sales. "Among the business segments, Production Group revenue declined by 10% on lower pressure pumping services in North America. Reservoir Characterization and Drilling Group revenues declined sequentially by 7% and 8%, respectively, on lower demand for exploration-related products and services in the International Areas as customer budgets were exhausted. These effects were amplified by the almost complete absence of the year-end product, software, and multiclient seismic license sales that have typically offset seasonal winter slow-downs in previous years...
  • We remain constructive in our view of the market outlook in the medium term, and continue to believe that the underlying balance of supply and demand will tighten, driven by growth in demand, weakening supply as E&P investment cuts take effect, and by the size of the annual supply replacement challenge."
  • Expects to close Cameron (CAM) acquisition in Q1.
  • New share repurchase program of $10 billion approved
  • Peers: HALBHIWFT; ETF: OIH.
