Lyondell Basell Industries (LYB) to lay off 345 workers

HOUSTON, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Lyondell Basell Industries (LYB) will lay off 345 workers, or 86% of the workforce, at its shuttered Houston refinery on April 17, according to a filing with the Texas Workforce Commission.

There are around 400 Lyondell employees working at the 263,776 barrel-per-day Houston refinery. About 70% of them are hourly workers represented by the United Steelworkers union (USW).

Reuters reported on February 18 that Lyondell Houston refinery layoffs were expected to begin in mid-April.

The workforce reduction comes after Lyondell completed the shutdown of the Houston refinery earlier this month, people familiar with plant operations told Reuters.

Houston Refining is one of the largest refineries in the United States designed to process heavy-sulfur crude oil, according to the company.

=LyondellBasell (LYB) reported earnings on Fri 27 Apr 2018 (b/o)

LyondellBasell beats by $0.34, beats on revs
  • Reports Q1 (Mar) earnings of $3.11 per share, $0.34 better than the Capital IQ Consensus of $2.77; revenues rose 15.9% year/year to $9.77 bln vs the $9.43 bln Capital IQ Consensus.
  • Outlook: "We are beginning to see the typical seasonal margin improvements in oxyfuels and refining, and we look forward to the benefits of continued high operating rates in the second quarter. Over the past two months, the U.S. market has experienced an imbalance between ethylene production and consumption, but this is expected to improve as the downstream derivative units attain full operating rates. Robust global demand and recent higher oil prices continue to support strong polyolefin pricing. LyondellBasell's organic growth program continues with our Hyperzone HDPE and PO/TBA projects on track"

LyondellBasell beats by $0.20, misses on revs  :
  • Reports Q1 (Mar) adj earnings of $2.48 per share, excluding non-recurring items, $0.20 better than the Capital IQ Consensus of $2.28; revenues fell 17.6% year/year to $6.74 bln vs the $7.08 bln Capital IQ Consensus.
  • Outlook: "As we look forward to the remainder of the second quarter, a significant amount of industry capacity will be offline in both the U.S. and Asia for scheduled maintenance. We believe this is tightening global olefin and polyolefin markets. Within our system, we have begun the maintenance turnaround and 800 million pound ethylene expansion at Corpus Christi and expect to ramp up toward full utilization of the expanded capacity during the third quarter. During the second quarter our refinery will operate at reduced rates as we repair damage from an April fire. At the same time, the refining and oxyfuels businesses have started to benefit from seasonal margin improvements,"
