-=Long trade : Canada Goose (GOOS) +10% (9/20)

  • 9/30/20: GOOS upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at Cowen

Analyst Oliver Chen lifted his rating on Canada Goose (ticker: GOOS) to Outperform from Market Perform, and raised his price target to $36 from $31. He believes the company “is well positioned as an outdoor resource amid the pandemic, as a leading brand in stores, and as a global luxury beneficiary as China improves faster.”

He highlights the company’s positive free cash flow, robust margins, and profitable retail channel, despite the headwinds facing the sector this year. Moreover, his recent consumer surveys showed that more shoppers are listing Canada Goose as their first choice for outerwear.

The jackets may have a high price tag, but Chen writes that their warmth, utility, and lower price points than other luxury players can help the company take market share. This is especially true given that the pandemic shows no signs of slowing in the U.S. as winter approaches, which means outdoor recreation—and related gear—will likely be a continuing trend that Canada Goose can benefit from.

Of course, tourism is a major driver for Canada Goose, and that has been hurt by Covid-19. Yet Chen believes the company is wise to offset this loss by focusing on sales in China itself. He estimates that China can contribute more than 50% of annual earnings per share over time—and that growth could also make Canada Goose an attractive takeover target.

Canada Goose stock is up 10.6% to $32.82 in recent trading, although it is still off 11.3% for the year.

Canada Goose reports EPS in-line, revs in-line; lowers FY20 EPS and revs below consensus
  • Reports Q3 (Dec) earnings of CAD1.07 per share, in-line with the S&P Capital IQ Consensus of CAD1.07; revenues rose 13.2% year/year to CAD452.1 mln vs the CAD448.18 mln S&P Capital IQ Consensus.
  • Co issues downside guidance for FY20, sees EPS of CAD1.33-1.37 vs. CAD1.65 S&P Capital IQ Consensus, and down from prior guidance of CAD1.70; sees FY20 revs of CAD945-955 mln vs. CAD1.03 bln S&P Capital IQ Consensus, and down from prior guidance of +20% yr/yr to $996 mln.
  • Commentary from Co: "The coronavirus outbreak is having a material negative impact on performance in the current fiscal quarter ending March 29, 2020. As a result, the Company has revised its outlook for fiscal 2020, which was last reiterated with the release of second quarter fiscal 2020 results on November 13, 2019. The health crisis has resulted in a sharp decline in customer traffic and purchasing activity. Retail stores and e-commerce across Greater China have and continue to experience significant reductions in revenue. Due to global travel disruptions, retail stores in international shopping destinations in North America and Europe are also affected. No supply chain interruptions have occurred. The Company believes that this is a temporary change in consumer behavior due to health precautions in extraordinary circumstances. However, the extent and duration of the disruptions remain uncertain and prolonged disruptions may also negatively impact future fiscal periods. Canada Goose's brand and business momentum in Greater China remain strong, as reflected in the doubling of revenue in Asia in the fiscal third quarter prior to the outbreak."

-=GOOS : downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at Wells Fargo

Analysts at Wells Fargo downgraded to stock to market perform from outperform on valuation concerns.

"While we remain confident on the trajectory of the GOOS brand and the fundamental story that has developed since their IPO in 2017, we feel the risk/reward today is not as compelling as it once was (when shares were cheaper and upside to numbers seemed easier to come by)," said analyst Ike Bochurow on Thursday.

The firm also said it believes that the fact that Canada Goose is not as popular on Google Trends as a reason for its downgraded outlook.

"We do view the fundamental story here as quite compelling (GOOS remains one of the strongest multi-year growth stories under coverage), we simply feel that valuation is going to become more relevant as the brand matures, the branded space remains choppy and certainly if brand 'heat' begins to cool off a bit," Bochurow said.

Wells Fargo lowered Canada Goose's price target to $68 from $80, which still represents a 37% upside from the stock's previous closing price.

-=Canada Goose (GOOS) reported earnings on Thur 8 Feb 2018 (b/o)

Canada Goose beats by CAD 0.10, beats on revs
    • Reports Q3 (Dec) earnings of CC$0.58 per share, excluding non-recurring items, CC$0.10 better than the Capital IQ Consensus of CC$0.48; revenues rose 27.1% year/year to CC$265.8 mln vs the CC$240.68 mln Capital IQ Consensus. Wholesale revenue was $134.2 million as compared to $137.0 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2017. In the first half of fiscal 2018, we shipped approximately $18 million of customer orders that were originally planned for the third quarter based on the order book, which was enabled by efficiency in manufacturing and sales planning to allow us to accelerate our shipment timing in response to requests from retail partners approaching their peak selling season. This was partially offset by strong demand in the wholesale channel. Direct-to-consumer revenue was $131.6 million as compared to $72.0 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2017. The increase was primarily driven by incremental revenue from four new company operated retail stores and additional seven new e-commerce sites which opened in fiscal 2018. We experienced continued strong performances of our existing e-commerce sites and retail stores.
    • Gross profit increased to $169.0 million from $120.3 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2017. As a percentage of total revenue, gross profit was 63.6% compared to 57.5% in the third quarter of fiscal 2017.
    • "In our peak selling season, we delivered strong performance across geographies, channels and categories this quarter, reflecting the continued demand for the Canada Goose brand around the world. Year to date, we added e-commerce sites in seven new markets, opened five new stores across three continents, including our partner operated store in Tokyo, and we successfully added more than 700 employees."

      • Wholesale revenue was $152.1 million as compared to $122.4 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2017, driven by growth across all regions. In the quarter, revenue of ~$13 million, which was originally expected to be earned in the third quarter, was pulled forward . Enabled by increased efficiency in manufacturing and sales planning, shipment timing was accelerated in response to requests from retail partners approaching their peak selling season. Direct-to-consumer revenue was $20.3 million as compared to $5.5 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2017, driven by strong growth in our North American e-commerce business and incremental revenue from new retail stores and e-commerce sites which were not operating in the same period last year.
      • Gross profit increased to $87.1 million from $59.3 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2017. As a percentage of total revenue, gross profit was 50.5% compared to 46.4% in the second quarter of fiscal 2017.
