=Big 5 Sporting Goods (BGFV) reported earnings on Tue 28 July 20 (a/h)

Shares of Big 5 Sporting Goods Corp. (BGFV) soared more than 50% in the extended session Tuesday after the retailer swung to a profit in the second quarter and said that a "strong momentum" in sales continues through the current quarter. Big 5 said it earned $11.1 million, or 52 cents a share, in the quarter, compared with a break-even income for the second quarter of fiscal 2019. Sales fell to $228 million from $241 million a year ago. Same-store sales rose 31.9% for its fiscal July, with sales strong in a "broad array of categories and throughout our geographic markets." That combined with cost-cutting measures put in place in response to the pandemic, Big 5 said. There were no consensus expectations available for Big 5 on FactSet.

=Big 5 Sporting Goods (BGFV) reported earnings on Tue 29 Oct 2019 (a/h)

Big Five Sporting Goods Corp. BGFV, +54.88%, a retail chain that has seen its market value decimated in recent years, surged more than 25% in late trading Tuesday after quarterly earnings doubled from the year before. Big Five reported third-quarter earnings of $6.4 million, or 30 cents a share, up from 15 cents a share a year ago, even though sales stayed almost the same: net revenue was $266.2 million, down slightly from $266.4 million a year ago. Chief Executive Steven Miller noted that it was the healthiest third-quarter gross margins since the company went public in 2002. "The increase reflects a shift in sales mix toward higher-margin products along with the successful impact of our efforts to optimize pricing and promotions," he said in a statement. Big Five shares fell 7.3% to $2.41 a share in the regular session, then jumped to more than $3 a share in after-hours trading after the results were released.

  • Big 5 shares tank on surprise quarterly loss, sales miss
Shares of Big 5 Sporting Goods Corp. (BGFV) fell nearly 20% late Tuesday after the retailer swung to a surprise loss in the fiscal second quarter and reported sales that missed Wall Street expectations. Big 5 said it lost $200,000, or a penny a share, in the quarter, versus a net income $2.8 million, or 13 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Sales fell to $240 million, compared with $243.7 million a year ago. Same-store sales fell 2.1% in the quarter, versus a 0.9% increase in same-store sales a year ago. Analysts polled by FactSet expected Big 5 to post GAAP and adjusted earnings of 11 cents a share on sales of $247 million in the quarter. "Much of the softness resulted from weak sales of camping and water sports products, which were negatively impacted by unfavorable weather conditions in key markets around the high-volume selling periods of Memorial Day, Father's Day and the start of summer," Big 5 said in a statement.

Big 5 Sports (BGFV) reports prelim Q4 sales below consensus

Big 5 Sports reports prelim Q4 sales below consensus and same store sales -9.4%
  • Following same store sales declines in the low mid-single-digit range for October and the low single-digit range for November, which included positive same store sales over the Black Friday weekend, same store sales declined in the low double-digit range in December as extraordinarily dry and warm weather conditions in most of the Company's major markets had a significant negative effect on sales of cold weather and snow-related products.
  • Q4 net sales were $243.2 million vs $263 mln Cap IQ consensus; now expects to realize a loss per share in the range of $0.08 to $0.13, which excludes charges related to tax legislation and asset impairment related to a small number of stores (may not compare to $0.24 estimate).
  • The merchandise margins decreased approximately 130 basis points for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2017 from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2016, when merchandise margins increased 68 basis points over the prior year. The decline in merchandise margins primarily reflected the sales mix shift away from higher margin winter product categories, promotional efforts to drive traffic and sales and comping against favorable opportunistic buys during the prior year period.
