The Canadian technology company is banking on resilient demand for its cybersecurity products on rising security threats in the information technology sector.

BlackBerry reported a surprise profit of 6 cents per share for the quarter ended May 31, while analysts were expecting a loss of 5 cents per share.

Its total revenue of $373 million topped analysts' average estimate of $160.4 million, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

Revenue in the cybersecurity business unit rose 5.5% sequentially to $93 million, while revenue from licensing and other services came in at $235 million, majorly comprising of proceeds from patent sale.

BlackBerry, which went public in 1997 and soon became popular for its ubiquitous business smartphones, shut its flagship business last year and has since been trying to sell its legacy patents related to its mobile devices.

In March, it signed a deal to sell patents, primarily related to its mobile devices, to Malikie Innovation Limited for up to $900 million.

Waterloo, Canada-based BlackBerry earlier had announced its plans to conduct a review of strategic alternatives, including possible separation of its core businesses - cybersecurity and software systems.

BlackBerry (BB) teams up with Amazon Web Services to manage vehicle sensor data

  • Having long ago moved on from its once-iconic mobile phones, BlackBerry (ticker: BB) Tuesday morning announced a deal with Amazon.com’s (AMZN) Amazon Web Services to jointly develop and market Ivy, which BlackBerry describes as “a scalable, cloud-connected software platform that will allow automakers to provide a consistent and secure way to read vehicle sensor data.

** BB **

The BlackBerry IVY system is a scalable software platform with deep roots on AWS cloud computing services. This vehicle data platform provides consistent and secure methods for gathering vehicle sensor information, packaging it into a normalized format, and preparing the data blobs for real-time analysis running on the car's own processors as well as deeper dives through AWS-based cloud computing services.

BlackBerry's role in this partnership consists of using machine learning tools to collect and normalize data from thousands of parts made by dozens of different manufacturers. In many cases, there are no industry standards available, and BlackBerry IVY will need to build its own data-access models for every undocumented sensor. Amazon's high-powered AWS systems will provide number-crunching muscle on the cloud-based side of the data analysis, augmented by direct access to the vehicle's embedded processing systems.

President Trump will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the week ahead at the annual United Nations General Assembly amid high expectations that a trade deal will be finalized. Heading into the meeting, Tokyo reportedly wants written assurances from Washington that it will not impose hefty tariffs on its auto exports before a finalized deal on farm goods and digital trade is inked. The vibe from the Trump-Abe meeting could impact trading on Nissan (OTCPK:NSANY), Subaru (OTCPK:FUJHY), Toyota (NYSE:TM) and Honda (NYSE:HMC). Meanwhile, economic reports on new home sales, durable goods and consumer spending will give investors a good idea where Q3 stands, while the final reading on Q2 GDP will put a period on the last quarter.

Spotlight on FedEx: Analysts expect FedEx (FDX) to report revenue of $17.88B and EPS of $4.39 with its FQ4 report. JPMorgan turned some heads by predicting that FedEx would clear the decks with below-consensus guidance across the board. FedEx conference call topics will run the course from fuel costs, tariff headwinds, wage inflation pressure to Amazon. Naturally, shares of UPS (NYSE:UPS) could see a jolt if FedEx surprises to the upside or downside with guidance. So far this year, shares of FedEx are up 4.1% to trail the 5.7% gain for UPS.

Playing Nike earnings: Nike (NKE) is expected to report revenue of $10.2B and EPS of $0.66 when it reports on July 27. Oppenheimer thinks Nike's stepped up investment spending could drag down FQ4 profit and the company's full-year guidance to act as a near-term negative catalyst for shares. "We recommend clients use any share price weakness in NKE as a buying opportunity. In our view, higher costs at the company are strategic in nature and will help to further enhance the prowess of the brand, over time," advises the firm. Foot Locker (NYSE:FL), Under Armour (NYSE:UAA) and Adidas (OTCQX:ADDYY) have all been known to swing up or down with Nike on earnings day.

-=BlackBerry Ltd (BB) reported earnings on Fri 29 March 19 (b/o)

(Reuters) - BlackBerry Ltd beat estimates for quarterly profit and forecast fiscal 2020 revenue above analysts' expectations on Friday as its focus on fast-growing markets like autonomous cars and cybersecurity pays off, sending its shares up as much as 15 percent on Friday.
The company forecast revenue growth of 23-27 percent for the year, implying total revenue of between $1.13 billion and $1.16 billion. Analysts on average were expecting $1.09 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.
BlackBerry, which dominated the smartphone market nearly a decade ago before losing out to Apple Inc's iPhones and Android devices, has switched to selling software to corporations and government agencies under Chief Executive Officer John Chen.
"This was the first time in many years ... that (we) overcame the quarter-to-quarter decline in handset revenue and services fee," Chen said on a call with analysts, indicating the transformation was now complete.
Revenue from BlackBerry's technology and solutions segment rose nearly 20 percent in the quarter, supported by the company's focus on QNX, a software used by carmakers to provide infotainment and other services to customers. QNX is used in more than 120 million cars worldwide.
"We are winning the lion's share of the deals" in the market for embedded software in auto, Chen told Reuters.
BlackBerry had 14 design wins in automotive in the fourth quarter, of which only three were for infotainment. The rest included non-infotainment applications such as software used in autonomous vehicles.
"It's good to see them getting design wins away from infotainment ... seeing those design wins in autonomous driving is a good indicator for them," CIBC Capital Markets analyst Todd Coupland said.
The company's fourth quarter also benefited from a 71 percent rise in revenue from its patent licensing division.
BlackBerry currently has over 100 patents in application, with more from Cylance, a cybersecurity company it bought for $1.4 billion in February.
Licensing and intellectual property revenue was $99 million in the quarter.
The Waterloo, Ontario-based company's net profit was $51 million, or 8 cents per share, in the quarter ended Feb. 28, compared with a loss of $10 million, or 6 cents per share, a year ago.
Excluding one-time items, the company earned 11 cents per share, beating the average analyst estimate of 6 cents, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.
Revenue rose 9 percent to $255 million.
