-=Axon (AAXN) reported earnings on Thur 7 May 20 (a/h)

Axon beats by $0.23, beats on revs; withdraws FY EBITDA and revs outlook
Reports Q1 (Mar) earnings of $0.40 per share, excluding non-recurring items, $0.23 better than the S&P Capital IQ Consensus of $0.17; revenues rose 27.1% year/year to $147.16 mln vs the $131.92 mln S&P Capital IQ Consensus.
    • Software & Sensors product segment, which grew 41% year over year due to demand for Axon Cloud software offerings and Axon Body 3
    • Adjusted EBITDA of $30 million more than doubled year over year, representing a 20% margin on revenue, and delivering a 51% incremental contribution margin on revenue when compared with Q1 2019.
Despite some uncertainty in the outlook, Axon Enterprise convinced Wall Street that it combines a recession-resistant business model with great execution and a huge opportunity for growth.

One number that Axon provided for the first time particularly stood out: 120% net revenue retention for its cloud-based software, which lets customers manage law-enforcement video footage and monitor real-time incidents remotely.

"The metric captures two key factors," CFO Jawad Ahsan said on the Axon earnings call. "First, our annual churn is almost nil, as our customers typically sign five- to 10-year contracts."

Second, "customers are upgrading their contracts to take advantage of all of the new software tools we have to offer."

    Axon Outlook
Axon withdrew its guidance of $100 million to $105 million in adjusted EBITDA on revenue of $615 million to $625 million, though not because of current trends.

The hit to municipal budgets and their impact on procurement by law-enforcement agencies "could materially alter our pipeline," Axon said.

Some customers have delayed body-camera programs or subscription upgrades. Yet the coronavirus threat has led others to make Axon devices standard issue to individual officers, rather than shared.

"Even though our business has been very resilient today and our best estimates have not changed, the level of uncertainty has increased" too much to offer guidance, Axon CEO Rick Smith said.

International sales grew 38% in the quarter, as Axon closed its first sales in a number of countries. Axon Records is now being used or tested at more than a dozen agencies. This is Axon's entry into a $4 billion market for managing law-enforcement incident reports and other data, which complements its digital video systems. Axon's first records-management deployment to the Fresno Police Department came in September.

Axon said the city of Maricopa, Ariz., recently became the first to go live with its computer-aided dispatch system in a $2 billion market. "The goal here is to shorten the time from hello to hello," Axon President Luke Larson said. "That's what the industry calls the time between when somebody first calls 911 to the time an officer arrives."

-=Axon (AAXN) reported earnings on Thur 7 Nov 19 (a/h)

Axon beats by $0.02, beats on revs; raises FY19 revs guidance, reaffirms adj EBITDA guidance
  • Reports Q3 (Sep) earnings of $0.28 per share, $0.02 better than the S&P Capital IQ Consensus of $0.26; revenues rose 24.8% year/year to $130.84 mln vs the $122.72 mln S&P Capital IQ Consensus; Adjusted EBITDA was a record $24 million
  • Co sees FY19 revs of $500-510 mln, from $485-495 mln vs. $489.38 mln S&P Capital IQ Consensus; reiterates expectations for annual Adjusted EBITDA of $80-85 million. Expects Adjusted EBITDA margin to improve sequentially in Q4 2019 driven by leverage on operating expenses, partially offset by gross margin pressure due to increased hardware mix. The expected strength of Axon Body 3 and TASER 7 cartridge shipments will result in an increased mix of lower margin hardware revenue in Q4 2019.

Axon (AAXN) rejects facial recognition software

Axon Enterprise Inc. says it is rejecting for the moment the possibility of selling facial recognition software, according to a report from NPR.

Scottsdale-based Axon (Nasdaq: AAXN) cited recommendations from an independent ethics board it created for its decision to forgo developing and selling the technology. Those recommendations highlight the fact that the technology is not advanced enough for law enforcement to rely on, according to NPR.

Facial recognition software was less reliable in identifying women and younger individuals. People of color also were harder for the technology to identify than white people, according to the report.

The ethics board also cited privacy concerns related to facial recognition, per NPR.
The board also cited privacy concerns which have long been raised by activists. "Even if face recognition works accurately and equitably—and we stress in detail that at present it does not—the technology makes it far easier for government entities to surveil citizens and potentially intrude into their lives," the report said.
Axon created the board after it acquired two artificial intelligence companies, according to NPR. Members of the board included experts in AI, privacy advocates, as well as computer scientists and other experts. While set up as an independent board, each member did receive a small honorarium from Axon for their work, reports NPR.

An Axon executive told NPR risks outweighed any benefit with facial software.
Mike Wagers, Axon vice president of emerging markets, tells NPR that the risks clearly outweighed the benefits. "We made the decision that just because you could deploy a certain technology does not make it right," he said. "You think about how this could play itself out on the streets," he added.
Earlier this year, Axon came under criticism after the Financial Times reported that the company had filed three patents for software with facial recognition capabilities, despite repeatedly claiming not to be working on the controversial technology.

Concerns of facial recognition software have grown over the years. Such concerns range from whether the technology could be used against lawful protestors to opening the door to mass surveillance around the country like it has in China.

    • Gross margin of 56.9% includes 360 basis points of impact related to costs associated with Vievu and a related large domestic customer contract. Q4 2018 gross margin was also affected by startup costs associated with initial production of TASER 7.
