FRANKLIN, Tenn. (AP) _ Community Health Systems Inc. (CYH) on Monday reported a first-quarter loss of $199 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.
On a per-share basis, the Franklin, Tennessee-based company said it had a loss of $1.79. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to 8 cents per share.
The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 12 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 6 cents per share.
The operator of accute care hospitals posted revenue of $4.49 billion in the period, which also beat Street forecasts. Ten analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $4.34 billion.
Community Health Systems expects full-year revenue in the range of $15.8 billion to $16.2 billion.
Community Health Systems shares have climbed 54 percent since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Monday, shares hit $8.62, a fall of 55 percent in the last 12 months.
